The Bullet

George Onslow ‒ do not be fooled by the name ‒ was known in his day as ‘the French Beethoven’. In this concert, he fires ‘The Bullet’ at us (and at himself). This is an autobiographical piece that describes a hunting incident with frightening consequences: Onslow’s ear was shot to shreds, which left him partially deaf. Beethoven, in turn, was not completely deaf when he wrote his famous ‘Kreutzer Sonata’. The work was later linked to Tolstoy’s eponymous novella, which tells the story of a jealous man’s passionate murder of his allegedly adulterous wife. In short: two romantic masterpieces in which drama and passion claim a leading role, all in the virtuoso hands of the musicians of the St. George Quintet.
